The context
Matière Média is a young Montreal company founded by entrepreneur Judith Fetzer, built around podcast and interview content production. The model runs on studios: spaces where several shows are shot every week, multi-camera, with a consistently professional look.
The mandate: design and build those studios from scratch — cameras, lighting, audio, network, storage — for a company that was just starting.
The constraint
A startup doesn’t have a broadcaster’s budget, and above all it can’t afford to be wrong twice. The classic trap has two versions: overbuild on day one and lock capital into underused equipment, or underbuild and buy everything again six months later.
The design had to produce professional quality on day one, with every component chosen to be multiplied as studios were added.
What we did
We defined a studio template: a Blackmagic cinema camera with fast lenses, Amaran lighting shaped for interviews, a Mackie DLZ Creator console that lets a host run their own audio without a technician, and Shure microphones. A repeatable standard, not a one-off.
The shared infrastructure went in from the start: a QNAP network storage on 10 GbE where every shoot lands, so editing works in one place no matter which studio the footage came from.
A repeatable template, shared infrastructure, growth in phases.
Then we supported the growth in phases: new studios built on the same template, lighting grids added as the sets matured. Each phase bought when it became necessary — not before.
The result
Matière Média now operates several studios shooting shows every week, on a common technical standard, with centralized storage. The company paid for its growth at the pace it happened.
That’s our approach with companies that are starting out: the same design rigour as for a broadcaster, sized for a business plan — and a partner who’s still there for the next phase.
